1. Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura septentrionalis, adult, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, District of Columbia, USA, October 29, 2006. On the right wing, note the worn outer primaries (P10-4) contrasting with the fresh inner primaries. There are also two new secondaries (looks like S7 and S10?) partially grown in (there are four molt centers in the secondaries/tertials of Cathartidae). Nikon D80; Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6G AF lens (@300mm); 1/500, f9, ISO 200.

 

 

2. Turkey Vulture C. a. septentrionalis, adult, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, District of Columbia, USA, October 29, 2006. Same bird as in image 1 above. In this shot of the undersides, P3 is about two-thirds grown in the left wing, as is S10. Nikon D80; Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6G AF lens (@300mm); 1/500, f10, ISO 200.
